People’s Trust Netherlands struggles on several fronts:
The combating of child prostitution requires efforts on multiple fronts. Giving information about smugglers, prostitution and HIV/AIDS in the quarters where girls run big risks to be kidnapped or sold, ensures that mothers and girls don’t step in smooth talks of abductors. Pressure on the govermment leads to more action against brothel keepers who detain children. The combating of poverty and the giving of education, contribute to the fact that girls run less risk to end up in prostitution.
With help from People’s Trust, in Delhi and Mumbai, rescueteams are started which already for ten years rescue girls from the brothels and help them with their return in society. People’s Trust works also together with partners in Nepal and Bangladesh to prevent child prostitution and to look for it that girls can return to their family. Currently People’s Trust sets up a new rescue team in Pune, 4 hours driving from Mumbai.
After girls are rescued, they have still a long way to go before they can live independently. First of all the girls have to look to the future. That is difficult, but by the support they can give each other in our refuges and the guidance of our local coöperators, till now they all succeed. The girls who can go back to their family are taken back after the process against their pimp is completed. For the girls who cannot return, other solutions are searched. Education and/or work are necessities for the girls who don’t return to their parents. After that is viewed if and how they can get independent.
People’s Trust is active in three big cities in India (Mumbai, Delhi and Pune), in sixteen villages in Nepal and in and around the capital of Bangladesh (Dhaka). On each of these places we have a specialised local partner who can initiate and implement the projects. Therefore the projects fit in well with local needs and culture. By these means the effectiveness is up.
The activities of People’s Trust are aimed at preventing child prostitution, rescuing the girls from brothels and supporting the girls in working on a new future. By clicking on the links below, you can read more about the different projects.
